Track During Covid - Week 1 2021

Ryle's Track Season Starts Wednesday!

We have a lot to do before we can enjoy the outdoors and prepare for a successful season. First, as with any year we have paperwork. Athletes may attend Tuesday 2/2, 3-4:15 PM and submit paperwork and fees or they can bring all necessary paperwork on Wednesday. We meet in the bus loop and encourage parents to park in the big lot and athletes to walk to the bus look. Parents, please check that all paperwork is present. Missing papers will disqualify athletes from participating that day. however, you may bring the fee later.

Coach Echeverria will communicate through many outlets. Below are some important links and reminders.

Besides this blog, we also have Twitter (@rhstrack and our website https://rylexcandtrackandfield.com/home) for live updates due to weather or facility delays or cancellations. This year we are also using the app TEAM APP. You may find the app in your Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Download the app to your phone and search for Ryle Track and Field. A link to that app is also located on our website. TEAM APP will also work on your pc or mac.

Our goal is for a smooth experience for the family and friends who support our athletes and for a successful and great experience for the athletes. Staying connected will help us achieve both those goals.

Running for Ryle is a great way to be involved and develop productive habits. I encourage students to participate because it's also fun and competition makes us more self-aware. This said, support our team and the athletes' hard work and buy your spirit wear. New to this track season athletes may purchase uniforms. We have uniforms for athletes to use, buying is not necessary. However, if you want to support the team a little more and help offset some of our expenses consider buying the uniform. This generous act helps us shift our resources to support athletes who face financial hardships. Again, purchasing the uniform is not required nor expected. Below is the link:
Online ordering for Ryle High School Track & Field Fan Wear 2021 ends on Sunday February 7th, 2021 (11:59pm EST)

And finally, our policy is "no school - no practice." Today we are on a virtual snow day so we will not meet for the admin day. Athletes who have not played any sport this school year (fall or winter) must bring all the paperwork (and $35 fee) with parent signatures with them either tomorrow or on the first day of practice Wednesday. Returning athletes with current physicals only pay the $15 fee. Please spend some time reading through our website and encourage each other through these cold and early days to do as much at home as possible. On practice days athletes must complete the COVID Daily Sign-in Sheet. Parents, please remind athletes and help the younger ones with this task.
IF YOU ARE SYMPTOMATIC OR HAVE A TEMPERATURE ABOVE 100.4F, YOU MUST RETURN HOME AND CONTACT YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY AND AWAY FURTHER PHYSICIAN GUIDANCE BEFORE RETURNING TO ACTIVITY. ** A NOTE MUST BE PRESENT TO VERIFY PROOF OF CLEARANCE ** Please note on game days, Coaches are required to turn in a paper form to the away team indicating you are symptom free.

Start of 2020 Outdoor Season

Start of Outdoor Season

Welcome to Ryle Track!

The girls and boys program are combined and running well. Coach Echeverria will lead the talented staff as head coach for both Men's and Women's track and lead coach for sprint training . Athletes are in capable hands with Kathleen Swinehart, Steve Fong,  Lyndsey Halik and Steve Swinehart  returning from last year's staff. Their knowledge and consistency will ensure continuity from the past success. We welcome Shawn Proffitt back to our team. He rejoins the staff this year as the associate head coach for the Women's team and lead coach for endurance training.

Training and Meets
Speak to your sons and daughters and they will tell you that we work hard but we also explain a lot. The staff promises only two things: that we'll have fun and that we'll all get better. Our commitment for well-designed and science based training means that we will push athletes and then provide opportunities to compete. We've added more meets for the younger and newer members on the squad. We ask that you help us by encouraging your athlete to attend practice and then to make the most of the meets. Athletes only have to arrive an hour before their events and they can leave as soon as they cool down and chat with a coach. Encourage them to stay for as many events as possible though, to cheer for their teammates and to step into an event when the opportunity presents itself. Meets are more about learning and growing than about getting a medal. The more we compete the more we learn about ourselves.

This week we start the learning. We ask that athletes and families use the website, twitter account, and practice to get as much information as possible. Any questions you may have you may also reach out to the coaching staff.

Spirit wear
Please use the link (Spirit Wear order) to purchase the Ryle Track wear. Some parents asked about women's sizes. Our vendor ordered unisex wear and assured us that the boys and girls will be happy with their orders. We ask that new athletes order a package with all the recommended items. Any athlete who cannot afford the spirit wear may speak to a coach and we'll find assistance

XC Team in the Mix for State Teams

XC Team in the Mix for State Teams

Lexington Catholic Cross Country Invite
The race at the Horse Park is special because it gives the runners and their teams a glimpse of the State Meet. Temperatures climbed into the mid 80's and everyone took notice and their times reflected the conditions. Still, everyone ran under the same conditions and we're able to compare for the sake of evaluation. Our young men all ran well.

One important take-away is that we placed 5th among the teams in our region, and that is not too bad given that our region dominated the top. While top 5 in the teams from our region may not sound very impressive, consider that in our first meet against the same field we finished 7th. Only the top 5 teams in our region or possibly only the top 4 will advance to State.

We are in the mix for those coveted top 4 or 5 positions. The team continues to improve and we missed out of 4th in our region teams by a handful of points. Our young men are training hard to become the difference for the team. Parents proudly share stories of their sons running on Sunday and of their adherence to a more intentional eating regiment. Everyone is training hard and you should all be proud of their dedication. We lost 4 of the scoring 5 from last year and the task of rebuilding creates opportunities. Keep supporting the team events and encourage your sons to speak with the coaching staff with concerns and ideas. As we approach the Conference and Region races decisions must be made, some different than those made up to this point. Keep in mind that some young but competitive runners have given their spot up to older runners. These opportunities provided runners with a chance to prove their speed and to earn a spot among the top ten. Now we must start running the top ten.

Middle School XC
Some middle school runners asked the coaching staff for an opportunity to run at State on Oct 20th. After some consideration and good conversations with between the staff and runners we proposed that a top 3 finish as a team and commitment by the runners to run at the meet could earn them that chance. Runners spoke to their parents and they can make the meets and those with other commitments (soccer) have agreed to prioritize the State Meet if the team qualifies. They race this Wednesday for a chance to run at State. Coach cancelled the MS participation at LexCath this weekend and changed the training focus to help the runners peak during their Wednesday race. Although they've been registered to run 10/13 that decision will be finalized after Wednesday. MS will compete in the same number of races as originally planned.

Ryle XC Invite 10/20
We had to "cancel" the Ryle XC Invite on the kymilesplit.com website because the date did not give us the most optimal team participation. In other words, we would have to work very hard and lose money. Instead we decided to host a duo meet against a local team that would give us a last race and an opportunity to host a meet. For this day we'll cancel our spaghetti dinner for Thursday, that way we'll all celebrate on Saturday. We need parent help to make this a great end of the season event:

  1. Course prep-cleanup
  2. Meet workers
  3. Senior Night prep
  4. Cookout workers
  5. Food/Drinks for the Celebration at the end of the meet
Possible Schedule (probably will change):
  1. 8:30 AM - Elementary Boys/Girls 2K
  2. 9 AM - MS Race (only if our team does not run at State)
  3. 10 AM - Girls HS Race
  4. 11 AM Boys HS Race
  5. 12 PM Cookout/Senior Celebration

Solid Performances Are the Proof of a True Distance Program

Solid Performances Are the Proof of a True Distance Program (V 6th, JV 1st, MS 2nd)

Williamstown Cross Country Invite 9/29

Thank you to all the parents who carried or dragged the tents, coolers, tables, and food out to the tent area for this beautiful meet. The team appreciates your energy and effort dedicated to the team, from the Thursday spaghetti dinners to the Saturday meets, all of it.

Williamstown HS put together a great meet and the boys responded well to the conditions. Varsity continues to improve and challenge each other. Fourteen runners are in the hunt for the top 10 spots for the regional team. Many of those 14 are freshmen and sophomores. We practiced hard on Friday and still the times improved. Next week we run at the Kentucky Horse Park, for the Lex Cath XC Invite. The following athletes will run varsity:

SwinehartWill
ReedJordan
LoveGreyson
DavisRyan
InderwiescheCarson
WhaleyLogan

Kaelin Reynolds won the JV race with a 19:54 time, good enough to place 8th on our varsity team for the day. The experience of running in the front and competing against comparable runners proves helpful to the our younger athletes. Joseph Sander won his JV race at Scott XC Invite on 9/15 and has demonstrated these lessons. Both of these young runners will have a chance to race together and lead the JV pack, while at the same time earning points towards the varsity letter.

We are 13 days away from conference and 26 days away from regionals. Tapering and reduction of mileage will start in 13 days. Junior varsity runners will switch their training to peak during the conference race on October 13. Varsity numbers will be reduced to top 12-13 after the regular season meet of October 20.

Perfect Fall Weather at New Richmond and Team Improving

Perfect Fall Weather at New Richmond and Team Improving

New Richmond Cross Country Invite 2018
Our fourth meet this season arrived just as the team has began to settle into place. Everyone is training hard and logging mileage. Times are improving. The top ten continue to battle for the coveted varsity positions. We are three weeks away from conference and five weeks from regionals. Finishing in the top five positions and taking the team to STATE will prove difficult this year, with some very competitive teams in our region. New Richmond XC Invite gave us a glimpse to the team's potential for success. Our -1 group ran well and pushed each other for a strong finish. Groups 0-2 ran in packs and pushed runners into the top ten. Our focus is now on racing strategies and tactics. We want to run in packs, and run for place. At times we did the pack running well and at times runners found themselves running alone. Race-time realities are not easy to control and we expect the runners to respond with sound strategies and hard-nose stubbornness.

After surveying the course, coaches agreed to discourage the use of spikes. Runners went from grass to concrete, to asphalt, and then to gravel, and mulch. We ran well and although a bit unorthodox and even with the threat of bees, times proved training is paying off.

Below are the top runners for the season through four meets. Thirteen athletes are chasing the 10 varsity slots available for conference and regions.
